The first time I participated in Karyn’s program, I tried to follow the program closely and the results were great, I went from a 12 to an 8 and I was able to breathe better, just outstanding results. Consequently, I said that I was going to try to be vegan at least half the time and made a lot of promises to myself that I did not keep. This time, I was more realistic. I did the best I could with following the program and went down about 8lbs. and the inches necessary to return to a size 8(which was my goal as well as cleaning out my system for healthy reasons).
I am wiser and more realistic this time around and realize that becoming a vegan is a lot of hard work and does not happen overnight (at least no for me); therefore, I am looking to continue doing the green shake for breakfast as I had been doing in the past, except when I am traveling and have no access to a kitchen (which has been extensive this year); be vegan at least twice a week; eliminate the dairy as much as possible and stay at size 8. I will cut down my portions and eat a balanced meal. I can breathe much better because I am not eating cheese and my nose is unplugged; my pains are less as I have had fibromyalgia issues in the past. I will do an elimination diet at least two times a year. The cell analysis which I did this time has been very helpful; I am excited about seeing the results now that I have completed the program.
Thank you for your dedication Karyn.
Six years ago, I moved back to this area to take care of my parents. At that same time, a close friend dropped dead at 56. Two years ago my parents passed away and I thought my stress would lesson but it was only the beginning of my year of trauma. 4 months after my parents passed, I had a complete hysterectomy compliments of uterine cancer, 2months later another very dear friend died at 56, 2 months later my oldest brother had a stroke, 2 months later my youngest brother had a stroke. In between all of this I had oral surgery. After such a year, I assumed that I would get back to feeling normal. That never happened. I have spent this last year trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I just didn’t have consistent energy. I was gaining weight, had aches all over my body and would be tired by 4pm. I didn’t know where to go.
In August, I attended a demonstration Karyn had given at the Veggie Fest in Naperville. My entire body was yelling, “This is it!!!!” I came home and signed up for the Sept. cleanse. This has been the easiest cleanse I have ever done and my body is ecstatic. I lost my cravings, a lot of congestion and 6 pounds but what is more important is what I found: energy, calm, hope and a way of eating that resonates with me.
Karyn has been a caring, passionate, dedicated leader who introduced me to the “thing” I was searching for this past year. I am looking forward to my next cleanse as well as my adventure with raw foods.
Well girlfriends and boyfriends this has been an eye opening experience. You see I come from an athletic background. I played tennis all of my life up until the last 7 years when I took up competitive body building. I even saw Karyn 20 years ago to assist me with my diet before I went off to play college tennis. I became a body builder after tennis thinking it was cooler to build muscle and learn about and nutrition. I learned to eat 5 lbs of chicken and a 12 egg egg-white omelet per day. I soon became allergic to both the chicken and the eggs. In search of more diet advise (ha ha), I sought out another trainer who wanted me to eat 3-5 rib eyes in the last phase of dieting for my contest. I must admit I did look quite amazing on the contest stage but I could not understand why me stomach and bowel problem that I had all my life, worsened. I now have gastroesophogeal reflux disease i.e. GERD to add to my repertoire of ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, depression, fatigue and sinusitis. The doctors told me to drink more milk and take all of their pills. I haven’t has milk since I was a child because of the constipation and gas and the pills were equally as bad.
I came to this detox class with my mom who simply asked “do you want to try Karyn’s detox class?” I now have no more mucus, sinusitis, headaches, sneezing, throat clearing, and stomach pain. I have lost 16 pounds and realized that these pants were not bought as capri’s but regular length pants because they now slide down my butt and reach my shoes (SMILE)!
I thank you Karyn for sharing your wisdom and opening your heart to us all. I truly have found a place that is spiritually warm, welcoming and enlightening.
I am at a crossroads-in the most transitory state I have ever been in. I just so happen to come back to Chicago to visit my family, for a month, the very same month Karyn was offering her detox class. It was a no brainer for me; I was in search for stability and I knew the best way to be strong in my life decisions and in dealing with my life circumstances was to be healthy both physically and mentally.
I love raw foods, I always have- but have never been able to really eat raw foods on a regular basis due to my lifestyle. I move around a lot, and often find myself in Sub Saharan contexts where the sense of community overrides- In other word; I am often in situations where I simply cannot say “no” to the food being offered. Though sometimes I try-my last trip lasted 6 months- I was working in Guinea Bissau, West Africa and at some point I decided I should not be eating so much rice- the staple food of the region. The HIP HOP Association I was working with quickly noticed and I was dubbed “the white lady who didn’t eat rice”. People would even call me to ask if it was true- no joke. My eating habits made such a scene!
So after six months of working hard, living through political assassinations, and not being able to “control” my food- I was exhausted, totally spent. I came to Chicago to find my grandmother deathly ill, and all the while; I needed to find a job. Put it all together and you get someone who could very easily become a victim of life circumstances…but that has never really been my style- so I detoxed instead!
These 4 weeks have been a raw, delicious, coconut-based cocktail party for me- I am not saying it was so easy by any means, but it has been an extremely fruitful investment in my state of total wellbeing. I went through energy highs and lows, tears and smiles. I watched my body morph but more importantly I noticed as I became increasingly strong from the inside, out.
I did like Karyn recommended and kept a journal- a part of me entries was keeping track of the people around me during the time, and the other part, my thoughts…which always veered in one direction; I think that is the direction I will work towards.
I love everything green: kamut, the green-meal and the green frame of mind. I most enjoyed how sensitive to my environment I became, scents were intolerable and people absolutely transparent.
I appreciate the staff and Karyn, herself, who made me feel very secure in an otherwise intimidated process of cleansing. I wish I could just travel with Karyn, my well being consultant- but since I probably cannot afford that, I would love to see a “travel-bag” or sorts- or people like me who are passionate both about the world, and about one’s self at the same time.
This cleanse has been so eye opening for me. First, I sleep so much more deeply and restfully each night. I eat less and am satisfied. I’ve lost 11 pounds so far and have been off of my hypertension medicine for about a week and a half. I take my blood pressure at least twice a day and my readings have been consistently low. I look forward to continuing my journey and adopting some of the health habits I’ve developed in cleanse boot camp!
I do not know if my testimony constitutes me as a Detox Star but prior to taking the Detox Class I was faced with high cholesterol and another surgery to remove numerous Fiber Tumors which came back 7 times greater than before around my uterus. I also experienced excruciating pain brought about by my menstrual period, my stomach felt as hard as a rock, and I had exceeding weight gain around my stomach. In addition, I constantly felt fatigued and exercised more often than now but saw no results around my belly.
After taking the detox class in September 2005 my cholesterol levels fell from 190+ to a normal level in June 2006. I no longer experience pain as before during my menstrual period even through my cycle is heavy and the tumors still exist.
I have not lost much weight but I no longer “live to eat”. Instead I “eat to live”. I’ve even identified some foods which agitate my stomach.
It has been a year since I took the class but internally I feel good and I faithfully continue with the supplement products. The Green Meal is my favorite meal. This product is loaded with vitamins and minerals and it really tastes good. “Yummy, yummy, for my tummy.”
I look forward to taking another class preferably in spring 2007. Now that I am aware of what is good for me internally I’m putting forth the effort to work harder at transforming the external.
I am still amazed how years ago I would not have been open to some of the method and procedures taught in the detox class to bring about healthy living.
I thank the good Lord for answering my prayers for a life changing experience regarding my health and using a ”sista in Christ” to introduce me to Karyn Calabrese’s Detox Class.
“Have a wonderful day and always pray for what you want, appreciate what you have, and be thankful for where your life is headed”.
